why color memory fails
Hold two colors side by side and your eye can separate differences far too small to name. Take one away and ask for it back thirty seconds later and that precision is simply gone. The gap between those two abilities is much wider than almost anyone expects.
Comparison is easy. Storage is not.
Discriminating two colors in view at once is a comparison your visual system performs directly — no memory involved. Reproducing a colour from memory is a different job: something has to be retained, and what gets retained is not the value.
What survives is closer to a description. Warm. Mid-dark. Fairly strong. Each of those words covers an enormous range, and rebuilding from them means picking a representative point inside that range rather than the point you actually saw.
Naming makes it worse
The instinct on seeing a colour is to label it. That label is a category, and categories pull recall toward their centre: a slightly unusual blue gets stored as “blue” and comes back as a more typical blue than the one you were shown.
This is why the instruction at the start of the game is to look rather than to name. It is also why brown is the hardest family in the game: brown is not a hue at all, it is dark orange, so the label points somewhere the colour wheel does not go.
Which channel drifts first
In the runs this game records, the three channels do not fail equally. Brightness drifts most, and it drifts predictably — people rebuild colours darker than they were, because a colour recalled without its surrounding light loses the context that made it look bright.
Saturation drifts second, usually downward: remembered colours come back washed out. Hue is the most stable of the three, which is the opposite of what most players guess before they see their own numbers.
The game keeps a running average of your signed error on each channel, so the direction of your own drift shows up after a few runs. That is what the “your tells” panel reports.
Why the two colors touch
On the result screen your answer and the real colour meet with no gap and no border. That is deliberate. Colour judgement is relative, and a seam — even a hairline of background — gives the eye a reference point and makes two colours look more different than they are. Edge to edge is the honest comparison.
